The Zone

http://vimeo.com/49879366

So excited, we are going to try a new way of teaching next year.  It is innovative and challenging and should encourage students to become life long learners. This is going to be an amazing journey and I can't wait to get started on it.  Have a look at the video above, which explains the spaces you create for student learning.  This is based on what the Northern Beaches Christian College in Sydney is currently doing.

Final Challenge for the year!

The final challenge for the extension students this year was for them to create a short film reporting on something in the school grounds. They were allowed to make it interesting, entertaining and required an interview from someone in the school environment. This is one of the final products.

King's Christian College Set to Take on the Best.

King's Christian College’s recently erected state of the art sport center is set to make the college the epitome of sporting success on the Gold Coast. The nine-month construction process, commencing in late December 2011 and seeing completion in September 2012, marked the opening of this sports center. This facility is set to make the college a force to be reckoned with in an extremely competitive Association of Private School (APS) sporting competition, but will aid in establishing our school as a dominant force in an extensive variety of sporting disciplines.

Not only will the center be used as an elite training facility to give our athletes that leading-edge when it comes to game day, but will also be accessible by all the college’s students whether they be there for athletic endeavours or simply for recreational enjoyment. King's Christian College’s state of the art sports center is completed with two basketball courts that also double as multipurpose courts, these courts are also complemented with digital scoreboards. Construction doesn’t stop there though; with floor to wall stadiums in the process of being erected to provide each spectator with a prime position.

The center also includes a spacious exercise gym adjacent to the four classrooms included in this center, that are intended to be used for the senior students physical education theory classes. Located on the bottommost level of the college’s cutting edge sports center can be found duplicate shower and toilet amenities. Also included in the immense precincts are both change rooms and multiple storage rooms. Surrounding the sports centers precincts are eighty newly erected car parks to better cater for the influx of students accessing the centers facilities.

The best is still yet to come in this three-stage development, with the third and final proposed stage to have a 25-meter swimming pool erected adjacent to the sports center, awaiting council approval. As in the previous stages, the nationally renowned construction company Spantech, will once more be at the forefront of the construction of the final stage of the college’s sporting complex with their revolutionary and modern construction solutions. This swimming pool is proposed to be constructed under the existing covered outdoor learning area (COLA), following the establishment of the 25 meter swimming pool, the structure is then proposed to be fully enclosed to provide an indoor swimming pool center.

We as students at King's Christian College believe this sports center will aid in fast tracking the college to the epitome of sporting success.

The Sports center is all set to be instrumentally involved in the process of Kings Christian College becoming established as a college possessing a unique, leading edge sporting prowess.

IT @ King’s . . . It’s a matter of balance
By Leio Ohshima McLaren
Year 7, King’s Christian College

Mr. Rees Davis, our inspirational principal at King’s Christian College has realised part of his digital vision for students. The recent introduction of the 1:1 laptop program for Years 6-12 and the provision of technology resources for Prep onwards.

Apple is the preferred platform, with iPad, iMac and MacBook the main hardware used to enhance the delivery of curriculum and engage students. Ask any of our students if they enjoy being able to use this innovative technology in the classroom and the answer is sure to be a resounding YES!

Director of Technology, Mr. Brett Moller has initiated many procedures to ensure students learn, understand and put into practice appropriate behaviours when online. Mr. Moller believes “upholding personal integrity, being transparent, valuing others and showing respect are at the heart of being a good ‘digital citizen’.”

With the school population of 1600 students, Mr. Moller faces many challenges in his daily tech issues. The concern about ‘finding balance in a digital world’ is currently a hot topic that affects students, teachers and parents. Pastor Brad Huddleston, an expert in this field, recently visited the College to share his considerable knowledge and helpful strategies with the student body.  Year 7 student, Hayley Gilders said that the presentation was “very informative and gave us some helpful tips. Mr. Huddleston said that we should really think about not multi-tasking or using computers 3 hours before sleeping and limit our use to only one hour at a time.”

King’s Christian College has emerged as a leader in recognizing the potential for integrating technology into the classroom.  However, Mr. Moller reminds us that we should always use the best tool for the task at hand.

Twitter Challenge

The first challenge for our twitter discussion board has come about today.  A parent was concerned about what the students were saying. So we took this opportunity to provide a learning experience on the rights and wrongs of twitting, what you can and can't say. We discussed trolling and how that could affect others. Also about the person who started the post taking responsibility for the direction of the discussion, and redirecting when required. A big learning curve not only for the students but myself. However, the benefits of providing students with a safe environment to get this right and discuss the whys and why nots can't be ignored.

King's Union Team

This year’s grade 7 King’s Christian College rugby team has been a force to be reckoned with. Over the last couple of years, they have come so close to the title numerous times. So why have they come so close but yet still so far away. Is there any explanation for disallowed tries, dodgy line referees or is it just the fact that King’s don’t have what it takes to lift their game in those dying seconds? We have uncovered the hidden secrets of this mighty rugby team and tapped into information no one knew existed.

In 2010, the team had many new players with massive amounts of talent to give, destroying every team in their way including rivals “Somerset College”. They were undefeated throughout the season, but then came the real test: the Macca’s Cup. It was six full games of rugby in one day, the ultimate test of teamwork and mate ship. King’s flew through the pool games winning every match by at least three tries. Then came the Semi-Final in which King’s won in a war against “Saint Stevens,” with a try scored in the last minutes of the game to seal the match.  The Grand-Final was electric with King’s playing the best they’d played all season. Trouble came when Somerset crossed the line for an early try. King’s fans were quietly confident when they made a break and scored but it was disallowed! This happened a further three times, which led to a fight that got the King’s Hooker sent off for the remainder of the game, giving Somerset a controversially win of 0-1.

In 2011, the team was bombarded with too many players with not enough talent. With over 50 kids trying out for the team with very few of them having enough experience to play, things weren’t looking good. To the teams and the spectators surprise they had an amazing season. With a strong forward pack and a smart back line they looked unstoppable. They had a very strong campaign coming into the Macca’s cup and won every game, beating last years champs Somerset. Their day was over when Saint Stephens knocked them out of the semis with a late try with only 2 minutes on the clock.

In 2012, the team looked certain for victory with a strong forward pack and a new hooker (Michael Morris). But with the teams captain (Jayvin Topp) away on holidays they lost there first few games of the normal season to a couple of average teams.  Jayvin Topp came back, just in time for the teams last Macca’s cup. The team absolutely slaughtered Trinity College in their game, but then lost in a very controversial game against All Saints (the hot favourites) that went 10 minutes over time for no reason. The team then had to beat Emanuel, but drew 1-1 with two of Kings tries being denied. So they didn’t proceed to the semis and finished 5th overall.

This Union team has had a controversial past three years, coming so close to glory so many times. The question is, will they get there, are they willing to do what ever it takes? With many players coming and going no one knows what the teams going to look like next year. And as Coach Malcolm Callander was heard saying, “We know there’s going to be no shortage of heart!”

Crazy Creative by Design Week

Creative by design week is wonderful time in term four, when Kings Christian College devotes an entire week to developing our creativity skills. Our theme for this week was song of our heart, this theme is about the creativity that we have deep within ourselves and what song we have in our heart. Such as, if we have an inappropriate song with cussing and rude messages we are rude and inappropriate, however if we have a pure, kind song we ourselves are pure and kind. Throughout the week we have been doing multiple activities that help us not only develop our creative skills, but also helps us further develop friendships and imagination skills. Some of those activities are chalk art, song writing, how to create a beat, a treasure hunt and even a gladiator challenge! The gladiator challenge was a favourite among students, where you must climb an inflatable obstacle course versing another person. However there is a twist. You must make it to the end of the course first while trying to beat the gladiator! The gladiators were 1 student and 1 teacher.

A reason many students enjoy creative by design week is because it is a creative outlet for students. There were two major competitions during this week, one of them was a grade vs. grade competition for the best all round act of singing, dancing, and rapping. The other competition was a whole school competition called ‘Kings Has Talent’. Grade 4 won the grade competition, and a band of grade 7 students called J.E.M.N with a lead singer called Jayvin Topp won ‘Kings Has Talent’. The finals for ‘Kings has Talent’ were held at the closing assembly on Friday along with the grade 7 performance for the grade vs. grade competition. Jayvin main singer of the winning ‘Kings Has Talent’ band quotes, “ The highlight of the week was J.E.M.N winning.”

All in all, this week has been amazing. It has been valued and will be treasured by the students of Kings Christian College, and we will remember this week with a smile for years to come.
