King's Union Team
This year’s grade 7 King’s Christian College
rugby team has been a force to be reckoned with. Over the last couple of years,
they have come so close to the title numerous times. So why have they come so
close but yet still so far away. Is there any explanation for disallowed tries,
dodgy line referees or is it just the fact that King’s don’t have what it takes
to lift their game in those dying seconds? We have uncovered the hidden secrets
of this mighty rugby team and tapped into information no one knew existed.
In 2010, the team had many new players with
massive amounts of talent to give, destroying every team in their way including
rivals “Somerset College”. They were undefeated throughout the season, but then
came the real test: the Macca’s Cup. It was six full games of rugby in one day,
the ultimate test of teamwork and mate ship. King’s flew through the pool games
winning every match by at least three tries. Then came the Semi-Final in which
King’s won in a war against “Saint Stevens,” with a try scored in the last
minutes of the game to seal the match. The Grand-Final was electric with King’s playing
the best they’d played all season. Trouble came when Somerset crossed the line
for an early try. King’s fans were quietly confident when they made a break and
scored but it was disallowed! This happened a further three times, which led to
a fight that got the King’s Hooker sent off for the remainder of the game,
giving Somerset a controversially win of 0-1.
In 2011, the team was bombarded with too
many players with not enough talent. With over 50 kids trying out for the team
with very few of them having enough experience to play, things weren’t looking
good. To the teams and the spectators surprise they had an amazing season. With
a strong forward pack and a smart back line they looked unstoppable. They had a
very strong campaign coming into the Macca’s cup and won every game, beating
last years champs Somerset. Their day was over when Saint Stephens knocked them
out of the semis with a late try with only 2 minutes on the clock.
In 2012, the team looked certain for
victory with a strong forward pack and a new hooker (Michael Morris). But with
the teams captain (Jayvin Topp) away on holidays they lost there first few
games of the normal season to a couple of average teams. Jayvin Topp came back, just in time for the
teams last Macca’s cup. The team absolutely slaughtered Trinity College in
their game, but then lost in a very controversial game against All Saints (the
hot favourites) that went 10 minutes over time for no reason. The team then had
to beat Emanuel, but drew 1-1 with two of Kings tries being denied. So they
didn’t proceed to the semis and finished 5th overall.
This Union team has had a controversial
past three years, coming so close to glory so many times. The question is, will
they get there, are they willing to do what ever it takes? With many players
coming and going no one knows what the teams going to look like next year. And
as Coach Malcolm Callander was heard saying, “We know there’s going to be no
shortage of heart!”
